5.8 interpret and label a diagram of an industrial fermenter and explain the need to provide suitable conditions in the fermenter, including aseptic precautions, nutrients, optimum temperature and pH, oxygenation and agitation, for the growth of micro-organisms

It is important the the paddles move to make sure that the micro organism is constantly in contact with the nutrients and oxygen and keeps the temperature even

The water jacket makes sure that the temperature is even/ stays at optimum temperature and helps with cooling down so the micro organism don’t die

Oxygen gets in the fermenter through the air vent that pumps oxygen in.


In the cleaning process steam is passed through the fermenter to clean it. This is because the steam is at a high temperature and can kill micro organisms
